Natty Dread $11.98 In choosing to record Bob Marley’s classic 1974 reggae album Natty Dread track-for-track in an instrumental jazz style, eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter opened himself up for skepticism. Yet an idea that looked questionable in theory would prove stellar in practice, as Hunter turned Natty Dread — with the songs sequenced exactly as they were on Marley’s original release — into one of the best CDs of his career. Hunter’s customized eight-string instrument and prodigious talent allow him to play simultaneous guitar melodies and basslines, but his Wurlitzer organ simulations and walking bass aren’t the only highlights of the opening “Lively Up Yourself.” Alto saxophonist Calder Spanier and tenorman Kenny Brooks alternate between swinging leads and supportive harmonies, and drummer Scott Amendola gets in creative solo flurries near the end. Hunter’s beautiful intro to “No Woman, No Cry” echoes both Pat Martino and Django Reinhardt; the saxophonists’ interplay and Amendola’s clever rimshots, tom-toms, and cowbell work lively up “Them Belly Full.” The secrets to Hunter’s success lie in separate amplifiers for his instrument’s guitar and bass portions; great wah-wah pedal work to achieve keyboard tones, and the requisite brain power to play basslines with both thumbs while fretting and fingerpicking the melodies. All are illustrated in readings of the tranquil “Rebel Music,” energetic “So Jah Seh” and the shuffling title track. Throughout Natty Dread, reggae is implied more often than played, as Hunter and his quartet portray the fun they had in arranging these pieces with performances both swinging and stirring (even dropping an “I Shot the Sheriff” quote into “Bend Down Low”). Spanier died after Natty Dread’s release when he was struck by a car, and Hunter subsequently moved from California to New York and restructured his band. Natty Dread Anthology $16.98 Cornel Campbell, one of the most overlooked and underrated of Jamaican singers, has long needed a collection like this, one that combines both his love songs and his conscious political material in one package. A key member of early harmony vocal groups the Uniques, the Eternals, and the Sensations, Campbell possesses a clear, soaring falsetto that carries a Sam Cooke-like elegance, and he is an excellent, melodic songwriter (and not exactly a slouch on guitar, either), which makes his relative obscurity a complete mystery. Campbell was only 11-years-old when he sang his first lead on “My Treasure” at Studio One in 1956, and he was the ultimate team player in his early groups, but his solo career didn’t really take off until he began working with producer Bunny Lee in 1972. All but six of the 46 tracks on this anthology are Lee-produced (Linval Thompson and Tapper Zukie also have productions represented), and he continually provides Campbell with wonderful soundscapes to work from, including such highlights as “Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm” (a reaction to Bob Marley’s “Natty Dread”), “The Gorgon” (which started a popular series of Gorgon singles from Campbell in 1975), the beautiful “Stars” (and its mirror twin, “The Sun”), a 1982 recut of “Queen of the Minstrel,” a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Wherever I Lay My Hat,” the odd, wry love song “Boxing,” as well as several well-conceived political numbers with a Rastafarian bent like “Jah Jah a Go Beat Them” and “Malicious World.” Campbell sings like an angel no matter what subject matter is before him, and even on the weightier sufferers’ songs he brings a subtle undercurrent of hope and joy to the table, making him, in a way, a kind of island version of Curtis Mayfield. That Cornell Campbell isn’t better known borders on criminal, but this impressive anthology should help rectify that. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

Natty Dread [Bonus Track] $11.88 Natty Dread is Bob Marley’s finest album, the ultimate reggae recording of all time. This was Marley’s first album without former bandmates Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, and the first released as Bob Marley & the Wailers. The Wailers’ rhythm section of bassist Aston “Family Man” Barrett and drummer Carlton “Carlie” Barrett remained in place and even contributed to the songwriting, while Marley added a female vocal trio, the I-Threes (which included his wife Rita Marley), and additional instrumentation to flesh out the sound. The material presented here defines what reggae was originally all about, with political and social commentary mixed with religious paeans to Jah. The celebratory “Lively Up Yourself” falls in the same vein as “Get Up, Stand Up” from Burnin’. “No Woman, No Cry” is one of the band’s best-known ballads. “Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)” is a powerful warning that “a hungry mob is an angry mob.” “Rebel Music (3 O’Clock Road Block)” and “Revolution” continue in that spirit, as Marley assumes the mantle of prophet abandoned by ’60s forebears like Bob Dylan. In addition to the lyrical strengths, the music itself is full of emotion and playfulness, with the players locked into a solid groove on each number. Considering that popular rock music was entering the somnambulant disco era as Natty Dread was released, the lyrical and musical potency is especially striking. Marley was taking on discrimination, greed, poverty, and hopelessness while simultaneously rallying the troops as no other musical performer was attempting to do in the mid-’70s. [The 2001 Definitive Remasters edition also includes the track "Am-A-Do," which was recorded during the Natty Dread sessions but shelved until the 1991 compilation, Talkin' Blues. Natty Dread Rise Again $11.98 Sadly, the Congos’ fate was already sealed two decades before this album’s release. In 1977-1978 they recorded one of the most seminal sets of the roots era, Heart of the Congos, arguably Lee “Scratch” Perry’s most awe-inspiring production. Unfortunately, Island label head Chris Blackwell remained oblivious to the set’s power, and it took three years before the small U.K. independent Go Feet picked Heart of the Congos up for release. By then the Congos had fallen out with Perry and moved on, only to see their new efforts fall flat in comparison to their earlier material. The group soon disintegrated, although Cedric Myton continued to work under the band name. Since that time, the Congos have been saddled with the most unpalatable of legacies, purveyors of an acknowledged masterpiece that most people have never heard, but still remain in thrall of. Then in 1997 the original trio re-formed, and, backed by a host of distinguished island sessionmen — the Barrett Brothers, Boris Gardiner, Mikey Chung, Tyrone Downie, Rolando Alphonso, and more — and with additional backing vocals by the Meditations, recorded Natty Dread Rise Again. The set kicks off powerfully with the evocative stepper’s stealth of “Rock of Gibraltar” and the vehement “Step Aside,” filled with Myton’s spine-tingling falsetto harmonies. But then the album seems to drift back into the past, emerging not in the Congos’ roots heyday, but in the mid-’80s, the nadir of reggae. The fault lies at the Mytons’ (Cedric and frequent co-writer and backing vocalist Yvonne) door — they oversaw the arrangements and productions, and thus must have approved the lush synths and faux strings that permeate so many of the numbers. And so Natty Dread Rise Again finds itself caught in a time warp, rising into an urban disco where the mirror ball is still spinning. Even the gorgeous title track is undone by the simpering synths, with only the rousing “Judgement Day” and more militant “Apartheid” fully spared. The two latter numbers feature smoldering solos by Alphonso, and throughout the set the musicianship is superb, but the Mytons’ arrangements bring the players’ work to naught. Natty Dominique’s Creole Dance Band $13.98 Natty Dominique is best-known for his erratic but sometimes quite rewarding playing with the great clarinetist Johnny Dodds in the 1920s. He made no recordings after 1940 except for the material on this CD; only two of the songs had been issued before 1993. Dominique is typically streaky in a septet that also includes clarinetist Darnell Howard, trombonist Preston Jackson, and drummer Baby Dodds, sounding fine on a few of the ensembles where he plays in a style reminiscent of Freddie Keppard. Most interesting are two excerpts from interviews, where Dominique talks about playing with Dodds, and remembers a lesson that he had from Louis Armstrong about the importance of being original. Natty Universal Dread, 1973-1979 $26.98 It should come as no surprise that the first collection to do full justice to the career of reggae DJ Big Youth was released by the Blood & Fire label, which has already distinguished itself with an exquisite catalog of reissues and collections designed to bring the music of reggae’s classical period (the early to mid-’70s) back into the marketplace. This three-disc box set includes 51 tracks from Big Youth’s most productive period, beginning with the early singles recorded for Joe Gibbs and on his own Negusa Nagast label (which included the charming “Hot Cross Bun” and “Hot Stock,” a collaboration with Gregory Isaacs and Leroy Smart), and ending with the topical “Can’t Take Wah Happen on a West” (written in the wake of the disastrous Westmoreland Flood of 1979) and the blistering “Political Confusion,” which name-checks Margaret Thatcher and Jimmy Carter. This is also the period that found him releasing his bizarre and wonderful cover versions — “Hit the Road Jack,” “Proud Mary” (titled “River Boat” here), and, best of all, “Sugar Sugar.” As always, the digitally restored sound is exquisite, but this set does mark the first time that Blood & Fire has messed up on packaging. It’s beautiful and the booklet is jam-packed with rare photos and extensive liner notes, but the individual disc sleeves are equipped with annoying and self-destructing styrofoam spindles. Natty Dread a Weh She Want [Bonus Tracks] $13.98 A collection of Horace Andy’s cuts with producer Tapper Zukie, the great Natty Dread a Weh She Want finds the haunting singer at a time when dancehall was overtaking roots music. Zukie’s contribution to keeping the roots spirit alive during this time can’t be understated. Besides Andy, he was cutting tracks with Beres Hammond, Dennis Brown, and many other waning roots superstars. Zukie’s driving riddims were designed to compete with the dancehall upstarts, but he never put a rootsman in too slick surroundings and resisted cheese like it was the plague. Andy was between his heralded 1977 album In the Light and his now very in vogue early-’80s work with the Wackie’s label. Looking back from 2006, it’s hard to understand why this album fell through the cracks, since the title cut was a revolution at the time in Jamaica. Sometimes called “Pretty Young Girl,” sometimes “She Wants Me,” “Natty Dread a Weh She Want” finds the singer yearning for love over an update of Alton Ellis’ “Hurting Me” riddim. The updating riddims device would soon explode thanks in no small part to the track’s success. Andy’s trend-setting cut is right up there with his breakthrough hit “Skylarking,” and the rest of the album is nearly as strong, featuring a winning mix of smooth lovers rock and conscious, harder cuts like the great “Freedom” and the even better “(Stop Your) Brutality.” This is the lost era of Horace Andy, but it certainly isn’t because the material was substandard. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi
